How Should Teachers and Principals Use AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an important part of education. AI for teachers and principals can save time, organise information and support better teaching and school management.
However, AI should be used wisely. It should support teachers and school leaders, not replace their knowledge, experience and judgment.
Let AI Do Routine Work
A simple rule for using AI in education is:
Let AI do routine work, but keep the thinking and decision-making with yourself.
Teachers and principals can use AI for many everyday tasks, such as:
- Preparing lesson ideas
- Creating worksheets and questions
- Writing notices and messages
- Analysing examination results
- Preparing reports
- Organising information
- Planning classroom activities
- Generating ideas for school programmes
This can save valuable time that teachers can use for their students.
What Should Teachers Still Do?
Teachers should not simply copy everything produced by AI.
For example, a teacher may ask AI:
“Give me five activities for teaching fractions.”
AI may provide several ideas. But the teacher knows the students better.
The teacher should ask:
Which activity is suitable for my students? Which one will they enjoy? What are their learning needs?
AI provides suggestions, but the teacher makes the final decision.
A Simple Example
Imagine a teacher has examination results for 40 students.
Instead of spending hours organising the information, the teacher can use AI to help identify:
- Which topics students found difficult
- Which students may need additional support
- Which questions were answered poorly
- Which areas need more practice
But the teacher must use his or her own experience to understand why the students struggled and decide what should be done next.
This is a good example of using AI in education as a support tool, rather than allowing it to replace the teacher.
How Can Principals Use AI?
School principals can also use AI to support their daily work.
For example, AI can help analyse:
- Student attendance
- Examination performance
- Parent feedback
- School reports
- Teacher meeting notes
- School activities
- Communication and planning
AI can provide useful information and suggestions, but a principal understands the school community, teachers, students and parents personally.
Therefore:
AI can suggest.
AI can analyse.
AI can save time.
But the principal should make the final decision.
The Right Balance
We should neither fear AI nor depend on it for everything.
Use AI for work that takes time and can be assisted by technology.
Use your knowledge, experience, values and judgment for decisions that matter.
The goal is not to replace teachers with AI. The goal is to help teachers become more effective and give them more time to teach, guide and inspire students.
The future of education is not about teachers versus AI. It is about teachers who know how to use AI wisely.
